Interactive module: "Homage to Sarajevo: symbols of violence"

8 april 2011

Sarajevo

The Museum of Modern Art of the Diputació of Tarragona presents the interactive module Homage to Sarajevo: symbols of violence, on the work "Homenatge a Sarajevo" (Homage to Sarajevo) by the artist from Valls, Jaume Solé (Valls, 1943), as part of the Bicentenary of the Siege of Tarragona commemorations.

One of the main aims of the Education Service of the Museum of Modern Art of the Diputació of Tarragona - MAMT Education Service - is to increase the awareness of its public and provide them with the tools to analyse the significance of its collections. Today, museums are undergoing a transformation through so-called information and communication technologies (ITCs), which provide instruments of diffusion to enhance the interrelation between the visitor and the exhibit.  The digital medium allows the democratisation of access to information, bringing cultural assets closer to the public.

The interactive module Homage to Sarajevo: symbols of violence presents information in digital format through an easy access touch screen, in order to encourage visitor participation by analysing the symbolism and the significance of the work by Jaume Solé, Homage to Sarajevo, and to make his artistic language accessible to the general public, by increasing their awareness of his execution and concepts.

Jaume Solé visited Sarajevo some years before the conflict and still remembers that European city in which different cultures and religions co-existed peacefully. With the outbreak of war, he could not comprehend how men could behave in such an irrational manner and turn their country into a blood bath.

This concern is expressed in Homage to Sarajevo, a work with a strong iconographic emphasis, which aims to serve as a reminder of that war which broke out in Europe in the 1990s, and also to represent the atrocities that are committed in all wars: murders, mutilation, rapes, etc. The commemoration of the Bicentenary of the Siege of Tarragona is an appropriate forum to reflect upon the issue of war, while directing us towards a culture of peace.

Jaume Solé's commitment to his era as an artist led him to produce this mural, which measures 180 x 420 cm and is made up of 21 reticules (seven modules each with three spaces), in which his social conscience and artistic creativity express themselves through maximum abstraction.

The interactive module Homage to Sarajevo: Símbols de violència is on permanent exhibition in the Contemporaneity Room of the Museum of Modern Art of the Diputació of Tarragona in front of the work Homage to Sarajevo.
