Art collection of the Red Cross in Catalonia

Art and Solidarity

From 21 January to 6 March 2011

Art collection of the Red Cross in Catalonia

Inauguration: 20 January 2011, 19.00

The Modern Art Museum of the Diputació of Tarragona presents the exhibition, “Art Collection of the Red Cross in Catalonia”.

This collection began in 1970 with a donation to the Institution of a work by Joan Miró, Tapís de Tarragona (Tarragona Tapestry), made by Josep Royo and currently on loan from the Red Cross at this Museum. The collection has grown through the donation of art works by various artists in our region, such as Miquel Barceló, Rafael Bartolozzi, Antoni Clavé, Montserrat Gudiol, Josep Guinovart, Joan Hernández Pijuan, Javier Mariscal, Jaume Queralt, Albert Ràfols Casamada, Josep M. Subirachs, Antoni Tàpies, Joan Josep Tharrats, Joan-Pere Viladecans and Antoni Vives Fierro, among others.

As Josep Marquès Baró, Chairman of the Red Cross in Catalonia, points out: “Our Art Collection is the best way of explaining this humanitarian task we have established as a mission, albeit with a huge dose of creative energy, but also the implied power of certain principles and values – those inherent to the International Movement of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent”.
