Women in Art. Artists from the Tarragona regions
The challenge. 1870-1950
From 12 May to 26 June 2016

As part of the activities to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Museum of Modern Art of Tarragona, and in relation to the project entitled "Feminine plural", which aims to showcase female creativity from the turn of the 19th century to the 20th century and up to the present day in the Tarragona regions, we present this exhibition to highlight the role and the importance of women in the history of art in the region.

From the sixties, in spite of the extensive bibliography created on an international level and the conducting of acclaimed studies of a generic nature on women in the sphere of art in Catalonia and in Spain, we have often failed to acknowledge our female artists sufficiently, with the exception of some articles and various exhibitions which have shown an interest in this area.

However, this exhibition has been possible thanks to a study by Dr. Antonio Salcedo, a lecturer of the Rovira i Virgili University, conducted in relation to a significant part of our recent history that has not been given the importance it deserves. Salcedo has spent several years researching the art produced from the end of the 19th century in our regions and has noticed that, when writing about art in the region, many female artists have been overlooked or, at any rate, only given a brief mention.

This exhibition, therefore, offers an initial insight into many of the female artists of the region and the work they have produced, and serves as a starting point that will encourage other researchers in the future to discover in the work and in the careers of such artists the material required for future research projects.
